Before launching the Strategic Leadership Institute (SLI) in 2010, Manie worked in some very diverse environments. These include a year as tourist officer in the Kruger National Park, a couple of years as environmental and agricultural reporter for the daily newspaper Beeld, and editor of Abor, a magazine focusing on forestry in South Africa.
